City of Toronto & Toronto Centre for the Arts Main Stage Reconfiguration Project

Gillam Group Inc./City of Toronto/Toronto Centre for the Arts

Gilliam Group Inc. (Gillam) is a Toronto based construction company that has partnered with the City of Toronto to create two theaters at 5040 Yonge Street; the Lyric and Stage Tower Theater. Gillam will need to build three overhead catwalks in the Lyric without interfering with the existing electrical, plumbing, or structural elements concealed in the bowl and canoe shaped attic. Gillam is collaborating with the Centre for Construction and Engineering Technology (CCET) at George Brown College (GBC) to create point cloud object using information gathered by LiDAR scans and virtual simulation based on the existing 3D Revit model. A 3D Revit model (Design Model) has been created by one of Gillam partners Diamond Schmitt Architects Inc. (DSAI), unfortunately, this model does not show the bowl and canoe structure as it currently exists. As a result, without using the point cloud object to detect clash points and layout hazards, construction of the catwalks would be extremely costly and even potentially dangerous.
