iPods, Music and Dementia….It’s Personal!

Alzheimer Society of Toronto (AST)

This project seeks to develop and validate the benefits and effects of personalized music with residents living in Long Term Care (LTC) across Ontario. A personalized playlist benefits residents in terms of increased mobility, increased opportunities for socialization and increased feelings of self-worth. Since January 2013, the Alzheimer Society of Toronto (AST) has provided an iPod Shuffle to anyone living in the GTA with a diagnosis of dementia in exchange for participation in their study researching the impact of music on caregiver stress. AST has partnered with GBC’s Activation/Gerontology Program to compliment this research, promote the program and spread the beneficial effects of personalized music.
